“How a Poor, Sick & Shy Village Kid Rose To Fame As A Motivational Speaker In America To Earn $10,000 For One Hour Of His Time”
Would you like to get paid to speak? Did you know you can make more money in an hour than a doctor, engineer, politician, or even more than most of the Fortune 500 CEOs out there?
That sounds great, isn’t it? Now the question is, it is possible for you to get paid to speak? Do you think you have what it takes? How much do you realistic think you can get paid to speak for one hour of your time?
Well, the answer to the last question depends on you and how hard you are willing to work. You see, if you want to get paid to speak, you have to pour all you’ve got into building your speaking business. It’s not a cakewalk. But I believe you can make it as a motivational speaker. How do I know you can get paid to speak?
I know because I’m doing extremely well as a motivational speaker. I started my speaking business without any resources, special academic education, or connections. In fact, I was a doorman making $4.25 an hour when I started. I was relatively new in this country and I was still learning English.
I happen to know there’s a lot of money to be made as a keynote speaker. Besides the fact that I’m getting BIG paychecks to speak, I get to transform lives in a remarkable way. You see, working 40 hours per week and living one paycheck behind every month is not fun. It’s downright frustration.
Last year, my multimillionaire mentor and friend stunned me when he brought to my attention that I was in the 5% income earners in America. Who would ever thought a poor, sick and shy kid would catapult himself into the big leagues in the United States of America without any connections?
Okay, you might be saying to yourself right now, “Come on Rene! Teach me how to get paid to speak? Enough talking.” No problem. Let’s get to it.
5 Ways You Can Launch Your Speaking Career Right Now…
1- Stop listening to your fears. As elementary as this may sound, your fear may probably be the only thing that is holding you back. Just like you, I had many doubts. I was afraid. Besides, I didn’t go to high school in America nor did I go to college. It was really hard for me to muster the courage and step out.
I asked myself many times, “How would I be a able to connect with American Audiences? What are my credentials?” I knew that I was going to have to compete with giants in the speaking arena.
Simply put, I was afraid. But I confronted my fears day and night to go after what I wanted. I felt the fear, but I pressed on anyway. To get paid to speak, you have to be bold, audacious, and courageous.
2-Take Massive Action. I began to take massive actions. You see, I don’t care how many years you’ve been thinking about launching your speaking business, nothing will happen until you do something. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been preparing either.
Think of getting paid to speak this way: You are like a musical group. You can spend eternity rehearsing. At some point, you have to step out and start performing.
The most important thing you can do right now it to take some kind of action no matter how small. Regardless of your current situation, there’s always something you can do. You may not be able to do everything. But you can always do something.
Decide what consistent action you will take in the next 30 days? Just do something. That brings me to the next step…
3-Create your promotional materials. When I decided to enter the speaking business, I had nothing. I basically took the dive with lots of courage. In not time, I found out what I needed to let the world know about me. I had to put myself out there one way or another. Financially, there were many things I could not do.
However, I didn’t let that stop me. I created some marketing materials. I guess I needed to convince myself that I was serious. I didn’t want to keep thinking or talking about it. 4- Compile a list of Civic Clubs. There is a slew of meetings going on every single day in your backyard that you may not be aware of. They are starving for good speakers. Heck, they are starving for any speakers.
Although they don’t pay, it’s a great way to practice and possibly find potential clients that can pay you to speak. That’s how I got my first few paid speeches.
5- Write a book. I can buy all your excuses to some degree. But I will not accept the fact that you can write a book one page at a time. I wrote my book when I was a doorman at the hotel. I didn’t need any money to write.
Unfortunately back then, one needed a good chunk of cash to write and publish a book. Today, it’s a lot easier. It’s ridiculously cheap to get published.
Heck, you can do it for just under $500. I spent about $10,000 to get my first book out. That’s money I didn’t have. I took a second on my house. I would not encourage you to do so today especially in this flimsy economy.
But keep in mind that entering the speaking industry is just like any business. If you want to get paid to speak, you will have to invest some money. Nobody can make you famous or turn you into a super star. It’s your responsibility. You have to throw yourself wholeheartedly into it.
Here is a list of what I did immediately to get going:
a) I created a one pager. That’s a regular 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper printed on both side. Here is what you need to put on that one pager: A short bio, your photo, your topic description, and some testimonials if you have any available. You just need something as proof you are serious and you are committed.
Let me mention to you that things have changed. And that’s good news for you. Today, you don’t need a lot of money to print a one pager. In some cases, you don’t even need to print one. All you need is a digital one pager for download.
b) I put up a web site. Depending on your financial situation, you can have a full fledge site or just a one-page site with your basic information. Money should not be an obstacle here. There are plenty ways to go about it.
c) I prepared a 20-minute presentation. Starting out, you will need to develop a short and powerful speech. Offer it for free to any local group that wants to bring you in. Yes, they are looking for speakers every day.
Oh, you might be thinking, “Rene, I’m really broke. Things are tough. I can’t afford anything right now.” Guess what?
Excuses! Excuses! Excuses!
I’ve got news for you. Whatever that’s stopping you won’t go away soon. Money is not going to show up. You have to get paid to speak before it will show up. Besides, if you are REALLY committed, you will find a way.
Listen, you may not have the money to build a web site. But you can find $8.95 to at least buy a domain name. You can put a website up. Use blooger.com or wordpress.com to build you a free site. Let’s not talk about what you cannot do. Tell me what you can do.
There’s no doubt you can get paid to speak. If I can do it, you can too. However, to get paid to speak, you need to stop contemplating that someday you want to be a motivational speaker. Someday is today.
