Here’s a question I got from Bonventure in Kenya: “I live in Kenya, am 20yrs old. How can I start on taking motivational speaking as a career?”
Becoming a motivational speaker has nothing to do with what country you live in. The reality is there are millions of motivational speakers in remote villages all around the world. Although they are not getting paid for it, they’re still impacting lives. Alright, let’s talk about the getting paid component of speaking.
Some countries are not going to pay the big fees we get in the United States. That’s a fact. Even the speakers next door to the US, Canada, are not getting the really big fees top speakers in the US get. But, let’s face it, the cost of living is not as expensive in most countries as it is in the US. Right?
Here’s one more thing: Some countries don’t even have meetings or conventions where they pay speakers to speak! In essence, you can be the best speaker in the world and never make a dime if you live in those countries.
So, what’s the solution?Move to another country! Or, set your mind on becoming an international speaker. Do your research. There are several countries that hold big conventions and paid their speakers. They even fly us from the US to speak. If you do your job right as far as positioning and establishing authority on your subject matter, they will book you to speak.
Another strategy is to focus on product development. Create high margin and low cost products. I’m talking about product you can deliver online. Heck, it can even be physical products. You basically speak for free than sell tons of products. In fact, there are many speakers in the US that use this model. They never ask for a check. Give them an audience and they will make the dough.
Public seminars and coaching are very popular in many countries. That might be a route you want to take. I don’t know. Your job is to find out what your market can bear in terms of fees. And also, determine how far you are willing to travel to speak.
Okay, having said that, I want to get one thing straight here. It doesn’t matter where you live when it comes to being an expert and authority in any field. The internet and digital technologies have broken down all barriers. It’s totally up to you. Yeah, it may be harder for you. But it’s possible. By the way, meeting planners book experts and authorities with a highly charged and compelling message.
Let’s see. You can write a book. You can write articles. You can create videos. You can create mp3 audios. You can write articles. You can distribute your videos all over the world. You can do all this in any country. You might say, “Gosh, Rene! You make it sound so easy. You just don’t know my situation!”
I don’t need to know your situation. I just know if you’re really committed, you will find a way. Now, I’m not going to tell you my story here. Maybe you read it somewhere already. But when I started in the speaking industry here, I felt like I was stranded on an island and trying to become a motivational speaker. I didn’t have connections or resources. And the internet was still in its infancy. My work was cut our for me. But I was totally committed. I spent money I didn’t have.
