Ask Rene

I’m Rene Godefroy. I’m a fulltime highly paid motivational speaker. I started with no connections and resources. I was a doorman at a hotel in Atlanta when I started.

Many people didn’t believe I could do it. I proved them wrong. Let me give you some pointers. Go ahead ask me your specific question.

i am little bit hesitate about the topic i want to tell i am clear about the topic but will i able to remember all the things and how to make a better presentation

what is the most important attribute a speaker has? and why? Being able to engage the audience or sounding like he has command of his knowledge of the subject of the seminar?

The most important attribute a speaker can have is authenticity. Nothing can replace that.

Hi Rene,
How do i develop the confidence of public speaking.Thanks.

Here's a simple answer to your question Agbaku: Speak. Speak. Speak. That's how to boost your confidence. Speak anywhere. Oh, you say you don't have an audience to speak to. Well, invite all your friends and your friends' friends to your house, a park, a library, etc. Give them a speech. Teach them something you learned. Speak anywhere. I was a really shy and introverted guy just like many people. My first speech was a disaster. I was so nervous. I kept confronting my fear. Hope you get it.

Dear Rene,
I a 27yr old man.Though am still a student of Engineering,i have this love & zeal to become a great motivational speaker.
My question is;at this my stage as a student, how do i start so as to get to greater hight before my graduation?

Hi Renee I always thought that being a motivational speaker I have to study like being in a collage but know I think I understand that I must attend seminars

I am a christian and I see things in spirit, will this help me becuase on the other side is like being a prophet and also I can sing that is the one of the things that God wants me to do! so sometimes I become confused where exactl should I start? As even to be in the music industry is not easy people are very corrupt and just singing for money!
Kindly advise me which key areas are very important to start?

Thanks Rene, it's amazing reading from you. I am a Pastor and want to speak people into greatness spiritually, financially, socially etc. How can this be realised in a short while?

I don't know how your mentoring positions work, but I am a 28 year old educated young woman looking to link to organizations that want to help and reach out to young people to encourage them when its needed the most. I believe in the power of realism and obtainable goals if you're willing to put in the work in order to reap the benefits of success. I have a gift inside to inspire when the motivation in situations and the individuals who create them is lost and I want to share my voice and conquer with my words. Can you in any way help me obtain this goal? I believe that change can occur as a ripple effect in a positive way but somehow and somewhere these actions have to start with at least ONE...I want to be that ONE!

Thanks is advance for your insight. I would like to share my writings with you so you get a feel of why I believe that I can excell in the area of corporate america so that if not for the entirety, I can touch at least ONE

Dear Rene :

The idea of becoming a paid Public Speaker has always been uppermost in my mind , but the fact that I have never done any research work in any specific field holds me back. Moreover , a sort of inferiority complex overwhelms me . What to do?

I would like to speak to people in customer service jobs about how they are not servicing the customers and sometimes they are even mistreating people. My question is how do a shy, quiet person bring out an issue that everyone wants to talk about without being mean since I am so often mistreated by people in that field?

I understand that you were a doorman and everything. But what exactly did you do to get started.

Rene please I will like to ask is it possible for me on this side of the Earth ( West Africa Liberia) to be a well known, historical and marketable motivational speaker, when am just a high school graduate who has no means of going to university. now marry with 4kids?

b. in the midst of motivational speakings do degree matters or educational standards?

HI Rene,

I too believe that this is a divine appointment, and I am so glad that God led me to your website today. I always have known that I like to motivate and inspire people and I also was working in a industry that I thought I was supposed to be doing for the rest of my lift, but then life happen and just like you mention the example of the catepillar, I most certainly can relate. I believe that this is what I am supposed to be doing and I am excited and wanting to know everything that I can to better myself for my new journey in life. I am like a spnge trying to soak up all the knowledge that I can get, and I know my God is directling my path. My question is how do I decide on what craft or keynotes to speak on, I want to speak on so many things that God has brought me thru and I also have a sales background in Staffing and Temporary Services as well, and I would like to speak on that as well. But I want to make sure that I am making a difference and just not speaking on everything. What would be the best way for me to really get started? Again I thank you for igniting my passion to step out on faith and speak a word to change someone's circumstances, and may God continue to bless your endeavors.

Warmly,
Roshell Davis-Claiborne

Aloha Rene ,

I google and there you are . I just finished calling a college Professor to meet with a counselor to find out what I need to be a motivational speaker . I am 52 years young :)

I see life outside the box. I have an animated personality and love to share my antics for life. I laugh loudly and consider myself funnier than possibly what people may find me . I am intelligent and help others all the time with my positive attitude . I love to see individuals grab life and not be so judgemental .

I studied drama and communications in college , but life took me and I never completed my degree . I love Face booking and have been told by my friends they go to my page for their daily laugh :)

So I know I have the right stuff . You said you were a doorman . How did you get your first break ? What was your first speaking gig ? How did this come to fruition for you ? How did you market yourself ? So many questions . It is a very vague occupation to pursue at the start . No degree ? No instruction manual . Please be so kind as to share your secret to pursuing such a wonderful dream . A Hui Ho - till we meet again :)

I was recently watching a show on MTV, titled "If You Really Knew Me", and was brought to tears several times throughout the show because of the differences that were being made in the student's life participating in the program, and I want more than anything to make a difference in adolescent and young adult lives. For the past two years, I have been attending community college in my small Missouri Community as an education major and have had several struggles along the way because of the lack of emotional connection I am able to make with the students and the lack of influence I been able to have on the students. I want to be there light house on foggy seas. I have overcome so much in my personal life growing up and consider myself a productive part of society and I wish more than anything to share my story of success with others and help students who are struggling in their home lives overcome those obstacles and know they are not alone. I know God has put me through the things in my life to make a difference, use my pain to help others overcome theirs. So my question would be, what degree should I change my focus to and what is your advice for my particular goals? I want to fully dedicate my life to motivational speaking and I need guidance to get started.
Respectfully,
Rachel Pritchett

Hi i'm finding it hard to get a job. The reason is i'm blind, and nobody wants a blind person workiing for them so i've found out.
So i thought this would be a great oppertunity for me to gain some employment.
I was just wondering if you think this would be a good way for me to go>
If you can help me out i would be very grateful.
thanks heaps for your time.

Hi Rene

Greetings to you Rene. I was always interested in becoming a good speaker I know I can but dont know whats keeping me behind. I have been reading lots of self help books and I got motivated in writing a book on motivations which I am still working on. But still I feel I am lacking behind somewhere something is missing. May be am confused. Please suggest I want the attention of my colleagues where one and all should love to hear me. I want to be a motivational speaker which I feel I am but as of now only with individuals.

Greeting to you Rene,I am Tombara by name from Nigeria.Am a graduate of Banking and Finance, but am presently working in an insurance company.I have always wanting to be a motivational speaker but don't know how to go about it till now that i have met you Mr Rene.
I have this question: As a motivational speaker, how to you get the attention of the audiance.
Secondly, how do you start your speech?

Hi Tombara,

There are several ways to get your audience's attention. You can open with a provocative statement, a powerful quotation or short poem, challenge the assumptions of the audience. Or you can jump on a table or chair.

You can also make some weird sound. Do something to surprise the audience. You can ask them to join you while you are singing a very familiar song. That is how you get their attention.

If you want them to stay interested and attentive, avoid using monotone. Use vocal varieties. Speak loud, soft, with a middle tone, and whisper. Pause, freeze, use your hands to emphasize your points, etc.

Hello,
Good Afternoon to you Rene. My name is Christopher Maddix and I'm writing to you for help or ideals on speaking on a subject that is dear to my heart and its an important to me, and others like myself and Bleeding Condition known in the medical world as Christmas Disease its given name is Hemophilia.

Hi Rene! First, I want you to know, you are an answered prayer! Okay, My first book should be completed by the end of this month! I am no novice to public speaking as a minister. Within the last few years I have been able to reconize and identify myself as a great motivator. As a result of speaking, I have watched people walk away with new enthusiasm to do something with what they have heard. I will continue to speak as a minister, but my question is: How do I begin to attract my audiences and market myself outside the four walls of the church as a motivational speaker, to empower people?

Hi Rene
Im 35 years old. I want to become a motivational speaker and an encourager for women.
I once lead a Women's ministry in our local church. I CAME TO SEE THE NEED TO MOTIVATE WOMEN.
There are a lot of hurting women in the church and most are not expressing themslves in the full potential because of certain things, I myself was once made mistakes in my life but I choose to rise up above my failures want God to use me to help other. I really want to make a difference in women's world by becoming an agent of encouragement in motivational speaking.

Hi Rene
I'm a 41 year old African American male with 13 years experience as a Child/Adolescent mental health case worker. The pain of childhood abuse from my stepfather has driven me to want to make a difference in the world...I want to make a bigger difference in the world and make money to deliver my family from 30K per year. I feel my destiny and potential is far greater than my current job and it's pay.
My question: Where do I start? I'm off on Saturdays and Sundays and I work from 8 to 5 daily (I want to SPEAK FOR A LIVING)

Dear Rene,
Its amazing to see a fast response, thankyou, I am working in a big school with a strength of 10,000. I feel the children of highersecondary need motivation and its the need of the hour now. These children are banded as bad, and so help me help them to get motivated. I am wanted them to come out of this feeling of shame and guilty feeling.
There is a attitudenal problem with the teachers who are handling them. Please suggest some solution.

I believe heart healing can heal anything.

with regards

I think sometimes you can use your age to your advantage. And that goes for whether you are young or old. Let's talk about being young.

Definitely you can identify with your audience. You can speak their language. You know their pains and worries. The reality is someone thought you have something worthy to share with the audience. That's an endorsement.

As a result, you should feel confident. The students know you are one level above them because you are the one that got the invitation to speak. It is implied one way or the other.

If you are afraid, the audience will sense it. That will make it hard for them to buy into what you have to say.

My advice to you is to get over your fear of being too young. Step into the light. You deserve it!

Hi Rene,
I am really in need of direction on this.
Where do I start to find my nich?
I am a gifted speaker and I LOVE people and helping people. I teach part time at a college and I have a full time job as a computer engineer but my Love and Passion is speaking, I have done many times for free, in schools, rallys, churches, I got standing ovations, I made people cry and laugh and I feel that I do make an Impact, but now I want to do this for a living but WHERE do I begin?
Thank you

hai! Rene am Deepa studying Master of computer applications, i want to speak like you, so what are all the steps that i have to go ahead in my life.I have read your motivational thoughts & suggestions & i have got impressesed on that thoughts that you have said.only one request from me Rene, that why can"t you be my mentor?would you please do this for me.

Good day Rene,

Congratulations on what you have achieved, and continue to strive towards.

I have always felt the desire to speak words of encouragement, inspiration and comfort to strangers and people that may be close to me. I subscribe to the idea of "Dare to Dream", which actually prefer to phrase as " Dream to Dare". I believe that without it, one's future is blurred by following those in front of us. That is to say, we remain trapped in the world of following others.

What really struck me about your site, is the idea of you positioning yourself, not only as a motivational speaker, but fundamentally one that is geared towards empowering others to empower others. That is something that I identify with.

Long before even considering the "business of motivation and inspiration", I began writing a book called " Let It Go" and even did 2 sessions with schools. But somehow, what I find natural and enjoyable for me to do for others, I seem to find difficulty in believing in myself that this is what I should pursue and be good at. Maybe it's because I don't think that people, in particular people that know me, will take me seriously.

Maybe you can share your thoughts with me. If you have the time, maybe I can forward you one of chapters for you to read.

Best regards,

Yuri Chin Choy

Hi Rene,
I am 49 years old and have been speaking and training sales people for a living for twenty years.
I have dreamed about speaking for a living outside of my profession and my job for a long time but have not been able to figure out where to start.
Most of my topics have been about sales and motivating yourself to sell.
My question to you is simple.
Where would you suggest that I start and with what topic?

Hi Mr Godefroy,

Im 30 years old living in Jamaica. More people in Jamaica look at values most times instead of value. Most times the messenger is paid more attention to that the message itself, meaning: they tend to look at what you have in terms of money and hence gravitate toward people that has already made it in terms of money.

How do I overcome this hurdle of not having the material stuff they use to measure out respect and be taken seriously in starting off and to be successful in the business of speaking?

Thank you.

Rene,

How are you? I got into speaking after getting sick with meningitis in 2000 and have been speaking for about 7 years. I have spoke to elementary schools to colleges, companies and other organizatrions. I have a website, which I created, not professionaly done but I wanted to see what I need to do to get to the next level, to become a higher profile speaker like yourself?

Thanks,

John

Dear Rene,

Kindly provide me some initial steps to proceed my hobby with my current job. At present, my age is abt 30 yrs & I've keen interest in writing poems.

Rene,

I am A 22 year old male named Jake from Anderson, South Carolina. I have a degree in machine tool tech. from Tri-County Tech. in Clemson, South Carolina. I feel like I have all the the knowledge in the medical disease, Cystic Fibrosis. Why do you ask? Because i have lived with it sence I was three months old. I am not a very shy person at all, I love to talk in front of a group. I guess you could say I like being the center of attention. The doctor told my parents when I was diagnosed that I wouldnt live past the age of 18, but here I am, alive and well. I feel like I would be a good Cystic Fibrosis speaker because the things that the doctors dont know about, I do. I have first hand experience. I could speak to parents and im sure what I would have to say would brighten there day and give them hope for the future. It is hard for me to find a job because of the economy for one, and I can only work in certain condtions because of my CF (work outside in the heat, in a factory, ect.) I feel like this is the perfect opportunity for me to give the people all around America A word of advise, A word of encouragement, feel good about myself and what im doing, as well as make money doing it. If you could write me back and tell me what you think it would be very much appreciated. I am serious, I think I have finaly found out what god put me on this earth to do.

Hi, I just want start a career becoming a motivational speaker; Currently I offer guidance and counseling to students where I am employed and I really enjoy talking and offering motivational and moral support to students and my peers; but first I want to focus on schools to build my profile.

So I want to know where and how do I start.? What are the steps and resources reqiured to do this job?

I've written two books on the subject that I like to speak about. Forgiveness and encouragement is my theme and I love spreading good news. Motivational speaking is a very competitive field and I find it hard to get "open doors".

My last book, "He Holds The Sparrow" is selling very well when I go to churches and ladies meetings, but I am not a good promoter. Are there people out there who take on unknown speakers and find them jobs like an agent? I am 59 years old and feel I may be running out of time yet I"m sure I can help others.

I was kidnapped from an orphanage by an escaped convicted child molester, hidden in deserted spider infested shacks and put in cotton fields to work for this maniac until I escaped at age fourteen.

I'm trying to find a way to break into this full time. If you have any ideas I would sure appreciate anything you have to say. Thank you for your kindness. Fran

I have spoken to groups in the past. But these groups have been local and easy to find. I know that just about any group is always looking for speakers. But where do you go to find a list of larger groups or companies who, after being contacted by you, would be interested in hiring you as a speaker? These are those groups/companies who are willing to pay $2500 and up. The local groups/companies will buy you dinner or some might pay you $100 for your time...this is not satisfactory. Is there a PR firm or a website which handles this sort of thing? You can probably tell that I'm at a loss here to find the next stage up and higher in speaking engagements.

Thanks for the opportunity to ask you a question, it is very much appreciated!

Joann

God Bless you Rene,

I just received a prophetic word that I would become a motivational speaker. I would like to know how do I make a demo and go about starting my motivational speaking ministry.

Thank you!

Sis Yvonne

Hello Rene,

I just returned from beautiful Haiti this afternoon. I was in Cap over the weekend where we have a chaplain ministry to the seafarers that sail into the port.

After many years of missionary service with Mission Aviation Fellowship in Indonesia, then in northern Canada, more recently with the JESUS Film Project (I produced the 2001 version of the JESUS Film in Haitian Creole and we recorded it at 4-VEH) and now with our own ministry to international seafarers, I would like to start doing motivational and inspirational speaking.

My biggest questions are: (1) I am 60 years young. What are my advantages and challenges. (2) Most of my speaking has been church related and I need to know how to not be 'preachy' (although I'm a pretty good story teller), and (3) what should a starting speaker without demo tapes, etc., charge for engagements?

Thank you for your consideration.

Most sincerely yours,

Phil DuFrene
