One thing you have to keep in mind is, meeting planners are looking for credibility when it comes to hiring a motivational speaker. In fact, being an expert with strong credibility is a shortcut for most meeting planners. Well, it’s the reality for any business. But since this blog is about becoming a motivational speaker, take it as a direct advice to you.
Now, how do you become a credible expert?
Well, there are many ways. And I don’t think I can cover all of them here. But, here’s the best one: WRITE A BOOK! Sorry if the capital letters insinuate that I am shouting. I just happen to strongly believe a book can help you get to the top faster. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Your Time… It’s Your Moment
I’ll tell you what; there are people out there that I’ll never be able to reach. And it’s the same for some of the big names in this field. There are some people they’ll never be able to reach. They can’t identify with them. Only you can.
I can tell you from experience that I’m reaching a large group of people who would never pay attention to the gurus. For whatever reason, I’m the only one that Read the rest of this entry »

I was at Micro Center checking the new Mac Book Pro. That’s right slowly but surely I am becoming a Mac fan! I guess it’s because I am more into videos now. And videos are the future.
While at the store, I started a conversation with a brilliant man. He was sort of perplexed to know someone can actually teach others how to become a motivational speaker. He said, “I don’t think it’s possible. You either have it or you don’t have it. People are born public speakers.”
Oh, oh… He struck a chord in me. At first, I hesitated. Then I got to think about it. I said, Read the rest of this entry »

Okay here’s a comment Thom Wert posted about my last post on You Don’t Need Any Special Education:
No special education nessary?? I agree, but let’s make sure people understand that education is necessarily to be successful. How can you speak on something that you know nothing about? You need to read and study about the subject your going to speak about. Mine you, education doesn’t have to be formal, it can be self taught! You don’t need to go to school (even though some of us get lessons from the school of hard knocks!) So my advice is to choose a subject that interest you, then it will not be a chore when preparing speeches.
And here’s my reply… Read the rest of this entry »

Do I need to have special education to be a motivational speaker? I cannot tell you how many times people ask me this one question.
Some would ask me, “Where did you go to school to learn how to be a motivational speaker?” There are those that ask me about my corporate background. They want to know where I got my business acumen from. I didn’t really think I had any. I am just using my common sense. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s a valuable speaking tip: Record every speech!
Yes, it doesn’t matter whether you are just starting out or you are a veteran public speaker record everything. That how you grow. That’s how you make progress. As a public speaker or I should say motivational speaker, you need to have a library of your speeches.
Now, you will get tired of hearing yourself. Or maybe I should point out that you won’t like hearing yourself. But that’s not my point. There’s a vital reason why I want you to record your speeches. Here it is: Read the rest of this entry »

Well, think before you leap and quit your job to become a motivational speaker. And I do mean think.
Although I didn’t have kids when I started, I still had to pay my bills and eat. I couldn’t quit my job cold turkey not knowing when and where the next paycheck would come from. You can call me coward or chicken if you want. But you are not going to call me stupid.
I never forgot this lady with a beaming smile on her face. She came to announce to me that she quit her job to pursue her speaking. I mean… She was so excited. She felt like it was the best decision Read the rest of this entry »

Please Understand Me
I do want you to arrive at your events in style when you are speaking in town. After all, you have to reflect the success you talk about. But starting out, you should resist living beyond your means.
Listen, if you stay with it, you are bound to make a lot of money. It’s insane how much money we get paid for a one-hour keynote. Read the rest of this entry »

Rethink Your Current Lifestyle Before You Jump.
If you are going to launch your speaking career or you want to start any business, now is NOT the time to buy that big house. You shouldn’t go for the fancy car, or the toys either.
Now, I’m not really telling you what to do. It’s your life. It’s your money. Do as you please. Read the rest of this entry »

Living Beyond Your Means
If I ruffle some feathers here, it’s not by accident. I intend to. But don’t worry. I’ll be gentle.
First, let me tell you this. So many people have a twisted notion of starting a business.
I have had this conversation many times with entrepreneurs while coaching or consulting with them. I’m sure you have heard the statistic that 9 out of 10 businesses fail within the first year. Haven’t you? Read the rest of this entry »
